The Alhambra is a castle fortress that dates back to the 9th century when the Muslim Moors conquered Spain. Original built as a military zone, it became the royal residence and court of Granada. In 1492, King Ferdinand of Aragon conquered Granada and unified Spain under a Catholic monarch. Today about 2 million tourists visit each year.
